Functional Medicine Nutrition and Wellness

Lauren Wallis: Nutritional Biochemistry BSc , Medical Molecular Biology MSc, Nutritional Practitioner DLN, Institute of Functional Medicine certified Health Coach and Olfaction therapy trainer (IPF)

Working with a Functional Medicine practitioner

Looking after your health and the health of your loved ones is probably THE most important thing you can do in your life.

Optimal health and wellbeing cultivates powerful resiliency in both the body and the mind. Good nutrition is not just about weight loss. Food is medicine and what you put into your body can cause and exacerbate illness.

Making informed nutritional choices can correct physiological imbalances.  Certain foods as well as environmental pollutants, toxins and moulds could be contributing to the underlying problem and exacerbating symptoms.

Functional Medicine practitioners promote wellness by focusing on the fundamental underlying factors that influence every patient’s experience of health and disease.

Physiological imbalances affect the way our brain and body communicate with one another.  Improper nutrition, food Intolerances, allergies, toxin exposure, infection and medication all have adverse on our bodies and negatively impact our general health and wellbeing. If left untreated, signs and symptoms of acute inflammation and physiological imbalances may lead to chronic illness and disease:

Through assessment of underlying causes and triggers of physiological dysfunction, a functional practitioner seeks to understand how the key processes that work to keep the body alive and in optimal health are affected. Some occur at the cellular level
and involve how cells function, repair, and maintain themselves. These processes are related to larger functions, such as:

 - How your body rids itself of toxins
 - The Regulation of hormones and neurotransmitters
 - The immune system function
 - Inflammatory responses

 - Digestion and absorption of nutrients & the health of the digestive tract
 - structural integrity
 - Psychological and spiritual equilibrium
 -Energy production (Cardiometabolic health)

All of these processes are influenced by environmental factors and genetics. When these key physiological processes are disturbed
or imbalanced, we experience unfavourable symptoms.  If left untreated, we eventually succumb to chronic disease:

- Cardiovascular and circulatory health (varicose veins, high blood pressure)

 - Autoimmune inflammatory conditions: asthma, skin ailments, gut disturbances (IBS, SIBO, Coeliac disease)

- Anxiety, Depression

 - Pre-diabetes and Type-2

 - Weight gain/loss

 - hormonal imbalances; Thyroid, menstrual conditions/menopause, Oestrogen dominance, mental health, chronic fatigue, insomnia

 - Pain

 - Osteoporosis

 -neurodegeneration

 - Urinary tract infections

 - Kidney, Liver and Gallbladder complications

Quite often patients feel frustrated and despondent when they are unable to find an answer to what is causing their symptoms  -especially when routine testing show “normal” results.

Taking the first step towards better health and making a sound commitment to the journey is an empowering experience.  Once you have the keys that unlock the doors to optimal health and wellness, you can heal both the body and the mind.

- Enjoy the gifts of vitality, energy and optimal health.

Let’s start this journey together…
